The origins of the game of golf

March 24th, 2009 Golf Trip Planning 0 Comment

The game was first recorded way back in the year 1297. This was said to have been in the Netherlands. The game was played with a rough stick and a leather ball. Whoever hit the ball furthest and in the least number of times was considered the winner.

The game of golf is however thought to have started in Scotland. The word golf may have been derived from the Dutch word “kolf” which means stick or club. The first 18 hole course was also in Scotland. Also the very first written rules were said to have originated from the Scots.

It wasn’t long before the game had spread over to England. It is said that the oldest playing golf course in the world is the Old Links at Musselburgh which is in East Lothian. It was said that Mary Queen of Scots played there back in 1567.

However courses have not always been 18 holes. Early golfers at St Andrews made a trench through the rough land playing eleven holes which were laid out end to end from the clubhouse to the far end of the property. On reaching the end they would turn round and play back therefore making a total of 22 holes. It was decided that some of the holes were too short so they became integrated and ended up as 18 holes as we know it today.

Golf equipment has developed markedly over the years It was in the 1930’s that the US Golf Association set a weight and size for golf balls. It was stated that the velocity of the ball should not exceed 250 feet per second and since this time it has continued to develop and make an impact on the way the game is played.

Another big factor the evolution of the golf club. The really early ones were made of wood. Hickory became the standard wood used for shafts and Persimmon was the choice of wood used for the club head because of its hardness and strength. As the golf ball developed and became much more durable it was then that the iron headed clubs were first introduced to the game. Steel shafts were first developed in the 1890’s .

It was in the early 1970’s shaft technology was introduced to the use of graphite shafts with lightweight titanium heads which meant the head could be made much larger.

The equipment has been developed massively with the help of modern day technology and now we have far more golf equipment than you would have ever imagined possible. Our forbears were not lucky enough to have such things as golf trolleys and golf buggies to transport them round the course. One thing that has stood the test of time is the sociable drink at the 19th hole at the end of a round of golf!

In the game of golf, having the right golf clubs is very important. The driver is conspicuously absent from the half set and that’s because it’s the most difficult to control and the point of the using the half set is to be able to control the clubs easily and perfect your swing. Effective Educative Points On Golf Swings

March 22nd, 2009 Golf Trip Planning 0 Comment

Golf is definitely a game where an individual’s discipline, determination, and heart can be measured. While others tend to see the game, when watching golf being played, as completely boring, this sport can truly reel you in. You just need to get ahead with your golf swing.

While the basics are the same for everyone, the differences in body types and mentalities bring forth a multitude of differences in the game that can cause confusion for most beginners. As such, one must adapt to his/her body for learning how to achieve the perfect golf swing. While the perfect golf swing is there, it is elusive as it is different for every individual. Practice and knowledge are the keys to success in golf, and muscle memory is what you are trying to ingrain into yourself. Once you have the proper golf swing in your system, confidence in your game and calmness of mind shall follow.

Basic Principles

One of the most fundamental principles that can be applied for immediate improvement in the golf swing is to keep your head still and eyes on the ball. This is to straighten your spine’s alignment and to aim at the ball properly. The spine is the axis that you are to swing with, so you have to keep yourself straight in order to achieve any positive result. Keep your head straight by raising your nose up. Your left shoulder should be under your chin by the time you are to swing. Tucking your head into your chest is not the way to go. The best way is to keep everything straight so that you can hit the ball dead center.

Keeping your head straight and with eyes on the ball will definitely help those who have constant problems with their golf swings. The next step required is to assume the correct position of knees and feet. The feet have to be planted onto the ground and the knees are to be straight while allowing pivoting to occur. Bend a little bit forward at the waist and look right at the ball. Minimize hip rotation to prevent swaying and do not overdo your backswing. This way, your left shoulder should hit your chin upon swinging.

Prevent this by lifting your head a bit until your shoulder doesn’t hit your chin anymore. In this position, slowly perform your backswing and downswing while staying focused on the ball at all times. A practice swing is best done first before actually hitting the ball. Practice your golf swing by focusing on straightening your head and keeping your eyes on the ball.

Position and balance are the most crucial points of a golf swing, leading to consistency and good power. Another thing that needs to be focused on is relaxation. Being tense can only make one’s golf swing worse. By relaxing your muscles, you can maintain your balance and flow with the swing as smoothly as possible. Practice this while maintaining your position. While this can be daunting at first, you can make things easier for yourself by breathing at a relaxed pace while maintaining the position without tensing your muscles.

Hold this position for around 15 seconds before doing your swing during practice. Keep your weight even on both feet and try to not tense yourself. This is a good way to improve your golf swing.

Golf Carts Make Playing Golf Easy

March 22nd, 2009 Golf Trip Planning 0 Comment

Golf is a beautiful game and golf carts add to its beauty. Though the usual tradition is to rent golf carts on golf courses, you can actually buy your own golf cart if you can afford it and deem it necessary.

A golf cart’s main use is to transport you on the golf course so that you can have a stress free game. With golf carts you don’t have to travel up and down the course while playing golf, they make the game simple and easy. But this is not its only use, golf carts can also be used to transport yourself round your local community and to the golf course if it’s not too long a distance. You can make your golf cart street legal in conformity with your local laws. The truth is there is no federal law against driving golf carts on the streets, such laws are determined by states and cities.

The popularity of golf carts is quite profound with players living in a retirement community especially one with a golf course. In such communities, golf players simply drive their golf carts down the street straight to the club house and onto the golf course, saving time and labor. In such cases, golfers make their golf carts road worthy by outfitting them with necessary accessories and equipments. These include lights, brake lights, safety belts etc.

These days some country clubs allow their members to buy and customize their golf carts and use them when playing on the golf course. So getting a good golf cart to buy should not really be a problem. The major decision you will have to make is deciding whether buying a golf cart is worth your while. That is a personal decision and is up to you, how much you love the game, if you can afford it, how often you play etc are some of the things that must be considered in making the decision to buy your golf cart.

If you’ve decided that buying a golf cart is a labor and time saving device worth your while, you can get good golf carts easily. There are different brands of golf carts these days, and with so many to choose from you can get the right golf cart for you. Remember that no matter how similar golf carts look, they differ one from another. How they drive their controls etc are part of the things you must familiarize yourself with before making  purchase. That’s the benefit of taking a test drive. Before making a purchase take your prospect buy for a test drive.

There are also many golf cart dealers around, just find one in your general area and check them out to see if they have what you want. The internet comes in handy in finding and buying the right golf carts for you without stress. Make proper use of the internet and you will be able to buy your golf cart easily. If you can afford it, then it is best to have it as it can serve all your needs and it’s worth your while why not go for it?

Guide For Purchasing Your First Set Of Golf

March 20th, 2009 Golf Trip Planning 0 Comment

When beginner golfers go to their local sports store to purchase the clubs they need to kick it off on the golf course they sometimes aren’t exactly sure what to buy. There are a number to different things to choose from. There are the expensive ones, the cheap ones, the most popular ones, the ones the pros are using. That’s what I’m here for. To help guide you in the right direction for purchasing your first set of golf clubs.

The first thing you should do is get your swing evaluated by a professional first. This way you can buy the clubs appropriate to your specifics. Those people somewhere who make golf clubs has a goal in life: to create golf clubs that maximize “the physics of a golfer’s swing” while allowing for a range of swing error to provide an accurate, yet forgiving shot. The better swing you have, of course, the less forgiving club you require.

Okay, so golf association rules state that you can have no more than fourteen clubs in your bag, one of which has to be a putter. So, now thirteen clubs are left in order to get together. Let’s get started.

Woods
There are three woods that golfers need: the 1-driver, 3 and 5. The wood is a hollow-bodied large headed club. These clubs are used when you are 175 yards or more away from the green, specifically off the tee.

Irons
A standard set of irons consists of: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Irons are typically used when you are 200 yards or less from the green. The closer you are to the green, the higher number iron you will use.

bagPutters
If you ever played putt putt then you know what these are for. That’s right! It gets the ball into the hole. It is used on the green only and there are a wide variety of putters out there to choose from.

Now, you don’t have to have a completely full set to start golfing. In fact, my research has shown that it is actually recommended for beginner golfers to start out with a short set. It is recommended to have a 3-wood, 3-iron, 5-iron, 7-iron, 9-iron and a putter. You can always fill in the missing clubs later once you start to get better, learn your yardage more and become more schooled on the physics of clubs. You can also purchase a short set second hand and sell it later or trade it in for a full set.

Stack and Tilt: What’s All the Fuss?

March 20th, 2009 Golf Trip Planning 0 Comment

Stack & Tilt Golf Swing

Are you completely happy with your golf or do you get frustrated because you wish your drives could be longer, straighter and generally more consistent. If only you could eliminate those occasional (or not so occasional) truly dud shots forever. Well you might just be able to do that now. Have you heard of Stack and Tilt? Probably. But what is Stack and Tilt? I heard about it a year or so ago but it’s taken me until very recently to find out what all the fuss and let me tell you the hype is justified. In case you haven’t heard of it, and it is going down a storm with tour professionals, it is a nbrand new kind of swing.

Golf Swing Whisperers’ Andy Plummer and Mike Bennett are the brains behind Stack and Tilt. It took twenty years of painstaking research but the wait was well and truly worth it as there is a revolution taking place. The theory behind this astonishing swing goes against everything you ever thought to be true about the perfect swing.

Although the Stack and Tilt Golf Swing maintains some of the basic principals, there is one fundamental difference which sets it apart from ‘normal’ golf swings- it doesn’t involve the golfer shifting his or her weight to the back foot. Your swing is greatly improved through maintaining the weight on your front foot rather than transferring it to the back as you do in a ‘normal’ swing.

The main benefit of the stack and tilt method is the huge improvement to consistency. The actual execution of the swing is simplicity in itself and yet you will see your ball go further and straighter than ever before!

If you would like to get a bit of Stack and Tilt into your game then why not try the Stack & Tilt Golf Swing Dvds risk-free for 60 days. That’s more than enough time to see your handicap come tumbling down! And start seeing some dramatic improvements in your handicap.

The Golf Swing Analysis Software and the Equipment Needed

March 20th, 2009 Golf Trip Planning 0 Comment

If you wish to invest the time, effort and financial resources to make your swing even better then golf swing analysis software is a good idea.

It’s fairly common for people to purchase golf swing analysis software without first considering the computer requirements they will need. There are lots of people who know how golf swing video analysis software programs function. It is still wise, however to check if your computer has the necessary power and parts that is needed to run the software.

Before you buy the golf swing analysis software check the package label for the system requirements and ensure you have the right setup. These things are necessary because if your computer does not have the parts required or it is improperly configured, the analyzer program will not run and be useless.

To get the best out of this software you should check to see whether your computer hardware configuration meets or exceeds the recommended minumum requirements. Check if your personal computer has the necessary system capacity and purchase additonal components if necessary.

It only takes a moment for your golf swing to run from the backswing to hitting the ball. Television channels use fancy cameras to obtain a good video of a professional’s golf swing. This enables the commentators on the golfing program to analyze every detail of the swing and provide insights to the viewers. In your situation for using it on a more personal level, such fancy cameras are not needed. However, an adequately performing camera is still necessary in order to get your swing in full detail.

Once again it is wise to double check the label of the golf swing analysis software for the optimum specifications. Check what camera specifications it needs so that it can work in tandem with the software on your computer. If possible, having a camera that has specifications that exceed that of what is required by the software will ensure the system runs correctly.

Get a decent computer monitor

A very important aspect to your golf swing analysis software program is the monitor you will view it on. The screen should be big enough so that the images from the software can easily be viewed on the monitor. The resolution should also be sufficient enough so as to allow the software to produce a perfect picture on the screen. As already stated, check the golf swing analysis software label as it should also provide you with the minumum monitor specifications.

Adams Speedline Driver Review

March 19th, 2009 Golf Trip Planning 0 Comment

Adams has done it again.  Just when the big boys on the proverbial driver block, were thinking they are creating distance from the competition, Adams Golf comes along with another winner, the Adams Speedline.  Too early to tell just how well this driver will do, but by the looks of it, well.  Very well in fact.

Adams has a reputation of catering to the average golfer, the avid golfers that make the sport what it is today.  And it looks like they have another one here, the Speedline was introduced and has gotten the attention with the recent Gold rating from 2009? Golf Digest Hot List for Drivers Under $350.

The driver has been streamlined to help achieve aerodynamic efficiency.  The design features a scooped heel and toe slots, a smaller face and optimal crown height and curve.  The Speedline is the first driver in golf to be engineered using wind tunnel technology for superior aerodynamics. The unparalleled aerodynamics translates into higher swing speeds for all types of golfers looking for more distance.

The Adams Speedline comes in 3 lofts for the standard 8.5, 9.5, 10.5. Also available is the Draw at 9.5, 10.5, 12.5 and HL.

So what are the pros of this new driver?  This driver is geared for the player looking for distance; the aerodynamics should provide a boost.  In fact, the talk from Adams is the Speedline will provide 3-4 mph more clubhead speed which translates to 3-9 more yards on the average carry!

So, are there any negatives?  Well, it’s a high launch driver geared for the recreational player.  Certainly not to say it will not suit the lower handicap, as proven it does with 3 Tour wins already!  So if you are a big swinger, check it out be keep in mind this driver is geared for a golfer needing some launch.

Golf Digest gave it two thumbs up, need we say more.  I think this driver will do very well.  Early indications are it provides the every-day golfer a big boost in distance. Already a three-time winner on tour, the Adams Speedline is designed with three main features that reduce drag for more speed which equates to additional distance, something most all golfers look for in today’s high tech drivers.

Fear And Lack Of Self-Esteem Are The Enemies Of A Golfer

March 17th, 2009 Golf Trip Planning 0 Comment

Golfers everywhere try to replicate the “perfect” golf swing to improve their game in leaps and bounds, making shots effortless and very professional. However, one thing to note that there is no such thing as the perfect golf swing as there is only a perfect golf swing for each player. As our bodies were made differently, so should our mentality in swinging a golf club. By adhering to basic principles and practicing everyday, anyone can achieve perfection and hit the ball onto the green every single time.

A lot of golfers suffer from not being able to hit either their drivers or irons right at all, causing slices and other problems with their swing. Some tend to have a “to blame” list: the weather, the slope, too much overtime affecting their game, or that they’re just warming up. One important aspect that many of the golfers ignore is that the fundamental motions are always the best way to go.

Here are six basic principles that can help you get the mechanics of your golf swing properly.

1. Correct alignment is the most fundamental factor for hitting your target square. The fundamental concept behind a proper golf swing is hitting the ball dead center, which means that alignment is the most important basic in a proper golf swing.

2. Make sure that you have a comfortable stance that will let you rotate your body in the most effortless way possible. Think of your spine as an axis and find your center of gravity by pushing your backside out. Once you achieve that comfortable stance, then you should have less problems.

3. Keep a vigilant eye on what you are going to hit. This has got to be the most ignored rule as it seems so simple. However, this definitely is the most important rule to keep in mind as you have to see what you are supposed to hit in the first place the actually hit. This is all about common sense, so do it.

4. Be patient and keep your mind concentrated on your goal. Apply this by thinking smoothly after you have planted your feet firmly on the ground. This is not about what happens next or what you did in the past. This is about the present, and you should always concentrate on what is now to achieve anything significant in the future. This way, you can achieve proper rhythm in your golf swing.

5. A good way of thinking is “sweep” for woods and “pinch” for irons. This may sound strange, but it can help you with your game as these are how clubs are designed. An iron is supposed to pinch the ball off the ground, while a driver is supposed to sweep it off the tee.

6. Humming a rhythm can help you keep your mind away from the golf swing and more on hitting the ball. These two things sound similar, but there is a fundamental difference. Thinking about the golf swing is a complication as it is more about technical aspects of the game, while hitting the ball is just the basic concept that the game is about.

Keeping things simple is the way to go as it helps you concentrate on the details that truly matter without making you panic when you do commit a mistake. A golfers enemies are Lack of self-esteem and fear.

Secrets Of Pro Golfers In Winning Swings

March 17th, 2009 Golf Trip Planning 0 Comment

Developing the perfect golf swing takes time and tons of practice. It also pays to take note of how pro golfers execute their winning swings. By taking note of the following tips and taking time to work them out, you will surely be enjoying tournament successes in no time.

1. Ask any pro golfer, and he or she will tell you that the power it takes to get that ball flying does not come from the arms alone. Use your entire body to achieve maximum power. If you are used to fuelling the golf club with your arms, wrist and hands, then you might struggle at first trying to employ the rest of your body. Practice hitting the ball with using your torso and legs. Once you get the hang of swinging the club with your entire body, you will notice that you are sending that ball flying with more consistency and accuracy.

2. Swivel your shoulders perfectly each time you do a backswing. Your right forearm should be parallel to your spine and your left wrist is flat. To ensure you are doing it the right way, your elbows and arms should form a triangle. Make sure you got this effective position pat at the top of your swing – you are guaranteed a perfectly solid hit, and a more accurate one.

3.  Many amateurs fail at making a solid hit because of two reasons. First, the right way of pivoting the wrist is done too late during the backswing because the takeaway is likely to be too low to the ground. Second, achieving a bad posture by swinging the club too far during the backswing, thinking this is the right way to gain power. However, taking note of a few things will help eradicate these flaws. Make sure a 45-degree angle exists between your left arm and the shaft of the club at setup. Your hands should remain as close to the ground as possible during the takeaway, while moving the head of the club upwards rapidly. Notice how your left arm is parallel to the ground and the shaft is perpendicular to it? This is about enough to prevent you from swinging your armstoo far at the backswing; thus, putting off bad posture and reverse pivot.

4. Golf is an outdoor game, so it’s best of you are able to practice chipping outdoors. However, one is tempted to hit chips indoors from time to time. You can perfect your chipping with the help of a wooden rod or a busted club shaft. Get the hang of your chipping technique – just make sure that your left wrist remains solid as the club passes through the area of impact. The rod or shaft you are using will hit your left side should your left wrist give way during the impact. Practice is the key to mastering your chipping.

5. It is not rare to find even pro golfers getting caught red handed when they lose flex in their back legs trying for distance. Inconsistent swings constantly take the success out of any game of golf. It is best to practice your swings from time to time and view your posture in a full-length mirror for better self review. Start with the setup position, hold it then look at the mirror. Do the backswing, hold it and observe your posture. This will help you determine your postural flaws during your golf swing.
